As when I got my 17" Powerbook, I had to calibrate the battery when I first got it out of the box(charge it up, drain it down, and off I went). Are there necessary steps that one needs to or should take when my iPod Mini comes to the front door?

My guess is you should do the same to the iPod battery as you did to your PB battery.

I suggest you add music to it when you get it...
I dunno, see what the manual says. If you got the Applecare, I wouldn't sweat it this time around, but replace it before it runs out, and take care of it next time
