I know there are post asking the same question but they all talk about recording and I'm no interested in recording. All I want is to WATCH Tv on my mac and just local channels. What is the cheapest way... Eye Tv and Alchemy PCI record and look too expensive. What about My TV from Eskape Labs? nobody mentioned anything about it...

I think that the Alchemy option would be the cheapest option due to its nature of PCI card. I have one and works great with a 1999 B&W PowerMac.
I think that there are other cards supported, so you do not need to buy the card from them if you can find one of these supported cards with a good price tag.
There are also some open source proyects to watch tv on Mac OS X with older tv cards.

If you really do just want to watch TV, the cheapest way is to buy a portable TV from a local store for $50 and set it next to your Mac monitor. This has the added benefit of keeping your desktop uncluttered.

With the new firewire eye-tv's out right now the price of the old usb one is coming down quickly. You may find a nice deal on ebay from someone upgrading. I know I am considering the same thing (selling my usb eye-tv and buying a firewire one).

The biggest issue is lack of usability with a satellite or digital cable. They need to have some sort of IR extension to control these boxes to be able to change channels from the computer.

A quick check at www.macprice.com found some low cost Mac TV tuner choices like MyTV 2 Go ($75.95) and MyTV 2 Go+FM ($84.95). They're both less expensive than the regular MyTV. And according to this tech support page here, both are supported in Panther with the latest MyTV software:

As an added bonus, both are small and USB bus powered. They take up little desk space and are even small enough to fit in a notebook case. I'd expect some dropped frames and resolution will be limited to 320*240. But if you're mainly looking for the convenience of watching TV while you surf as oppose to archive quality, 320*240 is certainly worthwhile. As an added bonus, you'll get the ability to import from composite and s-video as well.
If $76 seems a bit much you might want to hang out on eBay, dealMac, or marketplace forums to try to find one 2nd hand or on special. But I don't think $76 is out of line for other external TV tuners even on Windows. regards.......joe
