Any recommendations for negative scanning on either of these new scanners?
I have about 2000 film strips to do and wonder also about archiving, both format and software.
thanks.

Whatever you do, make sure that you get the model that has Digital ICE. I have a Nikon LS-4000 35mm scanner (w/ICE) and absolutely love it.

When I first started scanning negatives, I was horrified at the amount of lines across the negative. They were only visibile in the scanned image, but not to the naked eye. I thought it was the scanner until I looked at the negatives under a microscope. Sure enough, the lines were there. They were scratches.

As soon as I turned on ICE, the scratches went away, but also increased the time it would take to scan a negative. In the end, with the Nikon, I think I was scanning a strip of 3 negatives in about 10 minutes. Painful, but I had some really good results.

I don't know what your price range is, but you should consider the Nikon line. They've gotten rave reviews by professionals and are used in a lot of AV shops.

Be aware that silverfast ai included with the pro version doesn't include IT8 calibration. Its an $160 option direct from Silverfast Imaging.
