When you plug the iPod in (in the Dock or just the cable) does it make a sound? It should make a sound, letting you know it is connected. The screen will also change, telling you not to disconnect the iPod.

And does the iPod show up on your desktop? If it's not in the source list in iTunes, then it seems like it's not connecting to the Mac for some reason.

have you tried to restore the software on the ipod? where did you get the ipod? have you deleted the drive on it with disk utility? because if you have, i believe that you have to format the drive with the ipod software (should be in your utilities folder) if its not there. download one of these. either v1.3 for the older (non docking) ipods or v2.1for newer (docking ipods)

*NOTE, AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT* IF YOU HAVE AN OLDER IPOD, FIRST OR SECOND GEN, DO NOT INSTALL THE 2.1 SOFTWARE ON IT. IF YOU DO THIS WILL REALLY SCREW THINGS UP.

you never said what kinda ipod it is youre running here, so i had to be a little condescending, sorry. i hope one of those updates is what you want.

once you get the update on your HD, open it up with the ipod connected, click the lock in the lower left and hit "restore."

one more thing- is your iTunes the most current? i think its up to v4.2 now.

hopefully this is helpful. good luck man
Dan.

Does this mean you bought it used?

And I agree with d4nth3m4n... if you haven't already, restore the iPod software. If that doesn't work, maybe try to delete the iTunes prefs.

Yeah, I'd like to know exactly what you did as well. Just so that when/if the question arises again, we have a better understanding of what the solution might be.
