At Circuit City tonight, looking at a couple Sony HDTV-capable tvs that have DVI inputs. My old computer monitor is dying. Considering a 20" Cinema, but concerned about color, brightness, etc. HDTV is, well, nice. And with no known prospects of an OSX-compatible HDTV tuner coming, I wouldn't mind an HDTV that pulls double duty as a monitor, if the specs are right--that is, if I could get full 1080i resolution via DVI. No stats found at Sony's site. Anyone know if this is being done with success?

Becareful with this. If you have a powerbook, or know someone who does, I'd recommend trying it out at the store before you drop $$ on the TV.

DVI's on tv sets are now supporting the HDCP encryption protocol to prevent copying. This is a different standard then the DVI used to attach a computer to a flat panel. Because of this, there is a very high chance that you won't be able to simply attach a computer to the DVI port. Some HDTV sets are coming with both a DVI and a VGA port. HDTV makes use of the DVI port, while you can simply connect a computer to the screen via the VGA port.

You might want to check out the AVS Forum for more info on the HDTV set and attaching it to a computer. That is one of the best sites to discuss high-def TV's, decoders, etc.

Yeah, looks like this is generally a bad idea. Stories of hooking in to a monitor and poof, no longer a monitor. Plus a different pin layout on the DVI, so it's often more than a simple plug-in. Plus it seems manufacturers aren't real keen on the idea, not working to make it any easier.

So, um, okay. Is there anything new in the CRT world? Any such thing as a widescreen CRT? Usable for design work, also bright enough to watch DVDs or game with?
