epson photo 900 and photo 960
Much as I dislike toms hardware this guide offers a good explanation of the process.

I have a Epson Photo 900 and love it. Printing on CD-Rs or DVD-Rs is great, overall VERY NICE rig. The discs are a little more expensive, but worth it for the end result.

in Europe, you can get the Canon i865 and i965, which also allow direct CD printing.
There are also special machines that have a CD printer, CD burner, and robotic arm that automate the whole process.

The Epson Photo 900 and 960 have been discontinued, replaced by the R300 and R300M. I have a Photo 960 and it works well. Epson provides a PhotoShop template online, and I use that rather than the provided software. If you want nearly full-bleed, you'll need to run a few samples for perfect alignment.
You'll need to buy inkjet-printable CDs and DVDs.

I've been looking at the Epsons for this and have a couple of questions:
1. How is the disk run through the printer? Is there some sort of fixture it sits in?
2. If you don't get the alignment perfect, do you get ink all over thie fixture/mount?
Maybe it's my lack of vision, but I'm having a hard time understanding the specifics of this and what the problems might be.

No, that should not happen. The alignment process is for "alignment" each of the ink-jet print heads, so that you don't get the choke (I think that's the technical term; correct me if I'm wrong) like someimes you do get to see with colour newspaper or other offset printing. The "alignment" process doesn't really change the print head location at all. It's a process that compensate the actual ink location caused by the minor (but noticable when printed) print heads out of alignment to each other.

Damn, and I just bought an i960 today. Tomorrow, Canon will probably launch the i965 here in the states...my luck.

AFAIK, the only difference between the ix60 and the ix65 models is that the latter include a CD loading tray -- the printer itself is the same.
My understanding is that if, somehow, you got the CD tray from Europe, it would work in the U.S. model (note that the software for the U.S. models has the option of using the rear paper feed, which is where the CD tray goes in).
