I have an original iPod from 2001 i use with OS9 itunes and OSX Panther itunes. My friends ipod that i am also experimenting with is a 3G ipod.

If somebody could clarify these features I would appreciate it:

• You can plug any iPod with software from 1 through 2.0.2 into any iTunes and copy songs from the iTunes software into your iPod. However, you cannot copy songs from your iPod into the computer's iTunes.

If this is possible, this doesn't stop music sharing at all! It's just a matter of the "seeker" plugging their iPod into the "giver's" iTunes and copying away like there's no tomorrow!

The only protection is that you have to keep it on your iPod (unless you get a utility).

Thanks!

Well, true and not true. The recipient's iTunes will erase the iPod once it's plugged in, if the iPod is registered to another computer. Furthermore, casually browsing the iPod's hard drive will not reveal the song files.

However, there are apps out there that allow you to transfer songs from the iPod to another Mac, sans iTunes. Now, for protected AAC files, these tricks won't work. They won't be playable unless the recipient's Mac is one of the 3 registered Macs assigned to the owner's AppleID.

So, yes, and no.

thank you sir,

i can already see that you just have to turn off auto-synching and you're set.

and if the music is worth preserving forever, you must rip or copy the music onto the ipod hardrive and insert into itubes manually
