I need to back up about 20MB of important research project work.

At the moment I'm backing up (using Backup 1) to CD-RW about twice a week.

For such a small amount of data it's a fairly slow/inconvenient process. So I thought about a USB flash memory pen. Are such devices suitable for backing up important data, or are they more for portability. Should I stick to cdrw?

Depends on your backup needs, if you need a somewhat permanent backup then the cd is your answer if you need an offsite copy then the stick could be your answer. I'd be a little nervious though using flash memory to keep my backups. Copies that I use to move from one computer to another, but as a backup. I personally wouldn't trust it, but that's just me - a luddite
