Hey all
Now that there is a workaround for iDvd and non superdrives, can someone recommend me an external dvd recorder for my g4 iBook?
In U.K. and have seen the following on ebay:
Pioneer firewire/usb2 107 8 x dvr/rw +/- @ £167-00
NEC firewire/usb2 1300A 4 x dvr/rw +/- @ £144-00 [inc 5 dvd- discs]
or a Formac Devideon basic dv- r/rw @ £147 from various comp shops
Anyone recommend another, say lacie?
Dont wanna spend a fortune as can do dvd's through my av dvd/had drive recorder, but reckon idvd menu's etc will look a lot cooler!
Cheers
Chris

Buy a Firewire case and a Pioneer DVR-107 drive. The drive is US$126, and a Firewire case is about US$40. Although it shouldn't make much difference, I'd suggest Firewire over USB2. Don't buy a pre-assembled one from eBay! You may or may not have problems, but if you do it'll be a bitch to get the thing working (or replaced/refunded).

Hey Luca
I aint the most technical of persons, so talk me through this!
I buy a standard Pioneer 107 internal dvd recorder from a PC supplier, then get an external firewire case from such as ebay, then the internal pioneer just slots straight into the case and away we go??
Is it really that straight forward?
Cheers
Chris

If you're gonna get a separate enclosure, don't get a used external exclosure from eBay. Get a new one (for 5.25" drives), for about US$50.
You'll just need to plug in a few cables and tighten some screws.

Yep, all you have to do is slide the drive into the enclosure, connect all the cables, and tighten the screws to hold it in place. Then plug it into your computer and flip it on, and you should be good.
Actually, someone asked a similar question a while ago. He was afraid he wouldn't be able to figure it out, so I made a diagram for him to show how easy it is:

The Pioneer 107 is a great choice. I couldn't be more pleased with the one I have, in an external Firewire case.
Any 5.25" enclosures should work with it. They include a removeable faceplate- kept on if used with a 3.5" HD, and removed when using an optical drive. It's often prefered to get one with a recognized chipset, like Oxford, but in my experience this is isn't much of an issue with 'slower' speed devices like optical drives, as opposed to hard drives.
I haven't been keeping up, but what's the workaround with iDVD and external DVD-R drives? Some way to save to a disk image first?

Well, almost the same. Just make sure you get one that specifies that it is Firewire, preferably with the Oxford 911 chipset. USB 2.0 enclosures are more common, and cheaper, than Firewire ones, so make sure you don't buy one of those instead.
