I have an old EZ Quest CDRW external firewire drive which is very slow and I have since upgrade to a new CD_RW drive.

This got me to wonder could I take out the CDRW drive from the EZ Quest case and pop in a new hard drive? Would it then be a case of hey presto, I have an external hard drive instead of an old no good CDRW drive?

In side the EZ Quest housing is the standard IDE connection between the PCB and the CDRW-drive module. It should work should n't it. Or would I have to do something on the software side of things?

Can any one say if there have tried this or if it would work or not?

Cheers.

Have never done it before, but I would wager that this would work just fine. Give it a whirl! I think the worst thing that would happen is the drive wouldn't mount.

I tried this with my QPS 8x CD-rw drive made in 2000 and it didn't work. The only thing to go is to try it. Hope it does!

It should work fine. Any drive housed in an external case should be jumpered to master, so just be certain of that.

If your enclosure is older, and originally used for a slower optical device that doesn't require a faster chipset, it may not be the fastest external HD, but still useful for storage.
