There shouldn't be any loss in speed for a Combo drive, now that mainstream Combo drives offer 48x or 52x CD burning.

Are you looking for an external drive for use with a laptop or something? Or do you need an internal drive for a PowerMac? If you only want an internal, I'd recommend the LG GCC-4480B, which is fully supported for everything in OS X. 48x CD burning, DVD reading, and supported for Finder and iTunes. They are about $40 on eBay for the bare drive, if you can find one.

I'D PREFER AN EXTERNAL ONE BUT AM OPEN TO AN INTERNAL FOR A POWER MAC G3 RUNNING OSX10.3
THE COMBO DRIVES I'M LOOKING ARE ABLE TO BURN BOTH CD'S AND DVD'S
ALL I'VE SEEN ARE LIKE 12X????? ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT DVD ROM OR DVD REWRITTABLES?

If you also use Mac OS 9, avoid an internal LG 8x dvd-rw, I tried one and it just runs fine under Mac OS X but Mac OS 9 can not even start up with that internal drive.
