Good Spring Day to Ya Guys! I was thinking its time I got rid of my stacks of CD-R spools full of memories and stick 'em all on 1 GIGANTIC External Firewire Hard Drive, 250 GB, 500 GB! Am I crazy? Are YOU ; )? Please let me know if you think this is dangerous. I've heard hear-say about the complications and nightmares revolving around the External Hardrive. Buddha's Blessing & Samurai's Spirit! : )

umm, yeah.
The external drive would give you quicker access to your stuff, but I wouldnt get rid of the spools for anything. Drives fail, disks dont.

External HD's will work fine.
The only danger is if the HD crashes (or you drop it, or lose it, or something). This certainly can happen -- will you have a backup?

I did the same thing! Actually my setup is like an external Lacie D2 Fw400 200 gig, and a newly purchased D2 Big Disk Extreme FW800 500 gig hdd. The new one is really fast! Did video editing on it and no stutter...get to use my Fw 800 port on my PB 17 Rev 1 too....So bye bye cds....for now....hahahahaha...video editing really eats Gigs for lunch. At least now I'm comfy at 700 gigs external disk space...ieie

Get a big internal HD and an external case for it. That's what I did and I'm coming in at about $100 for 160 gigs. You could do it for cheaper than that if you shop around for HDs and capitalize on some rebates. Check http://fatwallet.com/forums/categories.cfm?catid=18 for insanely great deals on HDs. You can get an enclosure from Newegg.com.

Bonzai!
CatOne, Indubitably. One can never get enough back up. Especially after the infamous Key Crash in 2001 ( Kamikaze Attempt to Fix Sound Card with Car Keys...R.I.P. Old Fella) Would it be ridiculous to partition the Ex-HD for a safety zone? Arigato : )
Lertsiri, Oh man Video Does indeed! hahaha. That new 500 GB HD of yours sounds sooo sweeet! How long have you had the 200 Gig? Very stoked to hear from you, I'm leaning
towards Lacie 200 gig at the moment too. I can't seem to find any honest online stores who sell the Lacie for a good price? Much Thanks ; )
Tori, I can dig that! Did you pick up your HD on Fatwallet? Thank You : )

It's a message board that is full of cheaper bastards than me even, so I found a great deal on a Maxtor over the weekend and I jumped all over it. In the past week, there have been posts about 160 gig drives going for $20 after rebate at Circuit City, $30 with NO rebates at Office Depot, etc. It's a great site. If I had a tower, I'm sure I would have surpassed 1terabyte with all the good deals I see there. I've got a powerbook, so I'm limited on my external storage. Thank goodness.

You may want to keep an eye on Dealmac as well. Everyday there are deals for Ex HD's.

Thanks for the cool comments! As for my 200 gig D2...I believe when It first came out....I purchased it for my short films shot with 16mm Arriflex SR2 Cameras....So I had to get maximum storage..At the time, it was the D2 7200 RPM drives at 200 gig . I chose the 200 Gig version because it was the only one in the line of the D2 family that had 8mb Cache. But now I believe that Lacie doesn't make 8mb Cache drives for D2 FW400 200 Gig drives anymore...
Thus when time came to update my system for a studio gearing up to make my Feature Film out in Thailand, (Yes I am relocation from NYC OFFICE to THAILAND OFFICE to work on My Feature Debut Film as Director/Writer/Musician) I had to go with the best Lacie could offer. D2 Big Disk Extreme 500 gig (to get the 8mb cache configuration)
Editing off of a Pb G4 17" Rev A at 1 gig Ram and 1 Gig Processor. No problems with some 35mm Panavision Test shoots I did in NYC. So I guess no problem in future too... Why not SCSCII or whatever its called? Because the specs on the FW800 Extreme seemed faster than SCSCII! Check out the MAX TRANSFER RATE AD MAX SUSTAIN RATES! I love LACIE, I LOVE POWERBOOK.....probably soon Love G5 Desktop....ieie Plus Besides Movies (visuals) I also go into Music composition for film, so Audio has to take alot of space too....And so my Lacie D2 drive will be formated and cleaned up to take advantage of my Triton Studio 88 From Korg. That will be hooked up to my M Audio 410 Firewire MIDI /AUDIO box taking in SPDIF optical Digital Input from the Triton Studio88. So the Machine to handle that and the D2 FW400 200 Gig, will be my trusty old Pismo G3 Firewire Powerbook.
Altogether.......it comes down to the smiles and fun from Movie and Music scoring. Hopefully by next year...I predict that Lacie's 1 terrabyte drive (currently waiting to be shipped in April) will become the extreme edition and therefore pump up the max transfer rate for a cool terrabyte of speed.
Yes I recommend the Cardbus Lacie makes for FW800! and then Raid the whole system!
Holy cow, I just hope I don't get any radiation from all the freaking hardwareI accumulate....
Pics of my setup by the end of April or Beginning of May at my homepage, as my stuff is out at Sea and in a shipping container.
meanwhile: check out my news Press Release section, or Pics section where you can see my previous setup!

Contacts are there in the Contact tab of my homepage as well.
