Lexmark X1150 PrinTrio

This is the printer deal at the Canadian Apple Store. How is their OS X support? I would hope it's good considering Apple is bundling this, but I haven't heard anything about it. The deal is CAD$149 with $80 rebate. So you get the thing for $69 (<US$50).

Or should I just use the money to get a inkjet printer like the Canon i560 or something?

(This is for a person who would print but would never fax, and who would scan rarely. To be used with a X.3 iBook G4 800.)

Forget Lexmark anything, their junk of the worst degree.

As far as what to get...depends.
Do you want good photo output? Get a $100 Epson or Canon 6 color photo printer.
Do you need scanning, get the Epson CX series, work great, but the photo output is not as good as the true photo printer, they use a pigment based ink, photo printer use dye based ink, text output looks sharp but photo printer do pics better, the CX's photos is acceptable though and the copy function is to die for. The CX5400 and above use individule ink cartridges also... thats a big +. $20 rebate right now so final price a little over $100US.

Or even epson R-200 for around $100US, 6 color printing, printing on CD etc.

Just got the worst review EVER in Macworld. The thing is so stupid the scan bed leans forward so to get a picture to stay while you close the lid you have to tilt the WHOLE printer back.

Plus the print quality sucks, the ink costs a ton, it is loud and the scanner is too red.

OK. No Lexmark for her.

I wonder why Apple Canada is bundling such a POS with their products.

P.S. I hope they update the iBook soon. She needs the thing within the month.

We'll kind of explains why theres a $80 rebate on the POS. Nobody wants to buy it and Lexmark is trying to get rid of the stock.

Also, my opinion is that separates are better in the long run even though space savings and copy function of all in ones are nice. My Epson 1640 photo scanner is still chugging along nicely after 3 yrs. Where as ink jet printers are finicky and often fail long before that time frame for various reasons. I Just bought a new Epson 825 to replace my 777 about 4 months ago. Buy you a affordable printer that does what you need for under $100 just for everyday printing and quicky photos. And get a scanner when you can afford it or need it.

And also don't let anyone tell you other wise, taking your digital files to a actual photo lab for real prints at say $.29-39 for a 4x6 is way cheaper than paying for ink and photopaper. Paying for ink and photo paper will put you in poor house.

Plus you don't have to hassle with color calibration or having to waste a buch of ink running cleaning cycles because the heads are clogged etc etc. Also stay away from compatible ink cartridges and refill kits, have seen those trash inkjets just because they thought they were saving some $$$ on refills. My Epson 777 lasted a little over 2.5 yrs using only Epson ink. Where as other 2 guys at work tried refilling theirs cartridges and both were screwed within a year.

I get better quality pictures and better colour calibration from pix I print myself than my local print shops. (Printer is Canon i960.)

I don't do it often, but for those pix I want done correctly (and don't want to pay for a custom lab), then it's great. For multiple birthday shot copies to distribute to friends, I go to the print shop.
