If I want to use the digital out (TOSLINK) port to connect speakers to my G5, are these the only two off-the-shelf choices (I'm not looking to connect to an amp or other home audio components)?

Klipsch ProMedia GMX D-5.1 Speakers - http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...5.10.11.0.13.0

or

Logitech Z680 5.1 Speakers - http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...5.10.11.1.13.0

Any recommendations? There does not seem to be a preference in these forums. Any other choices I should be looking at? All help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

I love these monitors, all metal, build like a tank, sound quality only better by the higher end monitor from the same make.

But they only have RCA 75ohm digital input. i.e., you need a converter. Also, they don't support 5.1 decoding. But if you want the very best that nearly all the big recording studio use, go for it. Can be found on

while I am not familiar with the Genelec speakers the price would put me off a bit. I'm sure they are great but $1k on just computer speakers is a bit much. For that with the G5 I would rather spend and buy a good receiver with optical inputs and get a decent set of home theater speakers. Sure they won't be quite as good but they will still sound good and the money goes further down the line. That is how i plan on hooking up the better speakers on my G5.

As for the Klipsch I have heard those in just the 2.1 and for the money they are amazing. $149.00 is an awsome price for the sound and $199 for the 5.1 setup I would consder a steal.

I have heard the logitech's but I heard very good things about them too. Also, if I remember, they are a direct optical input. Not sure but i think they are.

I myself am going to get the Klipsch 2.1's for more local sound when i don't want to use complete surround sound since my G5 is both in my office with my wife's computer and that room is being setup as a second viewing room for both movies and tv through the computer.
- TiBook 867mhz
- Rev. A Dual 2.0ghz PowerMac G5, 3 Gigs Ram, Dual Dell 24" displays.
- Imac G4 20" with 1 Gig of ram
