My wife's old sawtooth does not like her new iPod. Neither of the rear ports will mount the iPod or even show it on the bus. My 40GB iPod works fine on her machine.

On a lark, I tried the internal FW port and her iPod works fine.

I know that there were "improvements" made to the FW on G4s through the years. Are there any known issues with Sawtooth FW ports?

I've got a 3G 30GB iPod and I use it on my Sawtooth, no problems. I'm running 10.3.3.

Works fine for me. Maybe its worth the 15 bucks to buy a PCI firewire card and see if that works for you.

If it wasn't for the fact that the internal FW port appears to be fully functional, I would. I think the external ports are somehow damaged. We had other problems trying to use a CD-RW in a FW case. It worked fine on my Pismo, but not on the sawtooth.

What kind of iPod is your wife's?

I think this combined with the inner port working would indicate a problem with the external FW ports on this particular machine, and not Sawtooths (Sawteeth?) in general. My 5 gig iPod works fine on my Cube, which is for all intents and purposes, a Sawtooth.

So then it sounds like you have your answer. If you really don't want to buy a FW card then get a 1-3 foot M-F firewire cord and run it from the internal port out of the case. It will cost you about ten bucks which to me would make worth buying a PCI card worth the extra $5, but its your money.
