Need Help to Restore ipod

	Dropped my second gen scroll wheel ipod. Got the sad ipod icon with the exclamation point. Tried to reset with no luck. Tried to force into firewire mode with no luck. After a while I finally got to the point where I have the do not disconnect icon flashing while connected through firewire. But now software restore hangs while opening (I get the application not responding message above the dock icon) but system profiler "sees" the ipod but disc utility doesn't. Can anyone help or does this have to go back to Apple??
