I've been contemplating buying a DVD burner and one use of it would be to backup dvds that i purchase, i've had a few 'walk-off' recently that i'm none to happy about.
my impression is that most video DVDs weigh in at about 6GB, is that right?
Is there a significant number of DVDs that are less than 4.7GB (or whatever the size of a blank disc is)?
thanks in advance.

The only DVD that I have that is less than 4.7 GB is Citizen Kane, which is B&W.

10GB is the most you'll ever need. Dual-layered discs hold 9.8 GB, the rest is padding in case you need it.
Most, if not all DVDs nowadays are dual-layered.
You could use some of those shrinking tools to strip what you don't need from a DVD and recompress it.
However, if you just take care of them like I do, you'll never have to back up anything except the TRULY rare DVDs.

It takes so much time to recompress a DVD to fit on a DVD-R (not to mention the reduction in quality) that it's not worth it. Just buy another copy if you care that much.

DVD-R - 4.38 GB
Average commercial DVD - about 7 GB or so.

DVD9-->DVD5 technology has changed a lot in the last couple of years. It doesn't take long on my TiBook, with excellent quality. Today's software doesn't re-encode. The software just throws out frames, but it works great.
Not that I bother though.

I do it to make backups of the Disney flicks for the kids. It's all one-click-and-walk-away now.
