i've got 2 macs with airport extreme. Now, 54Mb/sec should be 6,43MB/sec, Why do I get at maximum 1 MB/sec? (there's no wall between the computer-to-computer network.

This is in transferring files directly between the two computers (e.g. via AFP), correct?

Because if you're measuring downloads from the web (or whatever), you'll be limited by your ISP speed, not by the Airport Extreme speed.

Practically, AE would probably give you about 3-4 MB/sec "max theoretical" speed. This is shared between the systems, so it may well be you could expect to see 1.5-2 MB/sec in a transfer.

How far away are the machines? I find I can only get top speed ( about 3MB a sec) when right next to the base station, 5m away it drops to about 1/2 that.
