Please explain what you need the printer for. Different kinds of printers lend themselves to different tasks. For example, printers that excel at office color generally print photos wretchedly. Other printers are the opposite.

Yes, they exist in my dreams or used.
Canon has a printer for photos in lab quality, but it's not A4. Like tooki said, please tell us what you want to do with it.

What do you want to do with it?
Photos - Dye sub, but you'll be limited to 4x6 or so. HiTi, Canon, Olympus, and Sony.
Office stuff - There are no NEW sub $400 color laser printers. And the $550 Samsung CLP-500 is a nice printer, but its Mac support is abysmal. Apparently their idea of support is printing only, no duplex or resolution support. Samsung's response was that they are working on supporting all features, but had no timeframe. I returned it because of that. If I'm paying $550 for a printer, all features better work!
After my ordeal with the CLP-500, I picked up a Canon i560 inkjet. Specs are great - 22ppm b&w, 15ppm color, awesome print quality, low cost per page (less than the Samsung), and great Mac support. It complements my i960 rather nicely and only having to buy 1 set of ink is a plus (BCI6 all around + BCI3e).
Not sure what you want to do with it - tell us and we can better help.

Go to ebay and search for the Alps MD seires. These are great printers, that are probably going for $300-400 now. Alps has created OS X drivers, but I don't think the printers are being manufactured anymore.
