At work I have my keyboard and mouse plugged into the back of my 17" Apple TFT. I plug in the dvi to adc adapter cables (video and usb) into the back of my 1 GHz PowerBook (OSX 10.3.3) and then wake the system using the monitor's on button.
The trouble is, more than half of the time the keyboard and mouse are not recognized. (ditto for the devices coming from a powered hub, such as scanner and printer, also plugged into the back of the monitor)
Apple's official response is that the adapter doesn't supply enough power to the USB peripherals, which in turn just don't show up. Sorry!
Great, thanks! Wish I'd known that beforehand. Ok, I'm pissed that Apple's engineers didn't consider that when designing the adapter, especially when one considers how costly it is, but as the service tech told me, "c'est la vie".
Why is it hit and miss, though? Is there anything I can do to increase the likelihood that the devices will be recognized?
UPDATE!!
finally asked Apple to replace unit, and lo and behold with the new converter the problem is fixed. Was just a faulty unit (yet had I not insisted on a replacement, Apple's tech support wouldn't have suggested it).
