I have a 30 Gig iPod and a dual 1.8 G5. The iPod is actually a replacement from one of the same model the firewire port of which got fried. This iPod has been working fine for about a month and a half and it has lost substantial amounts of battery longevity and has also stopped mounting on my desktop or syncing with iTunes. It seems to me that the battery life decrease and the no more mounting issue occurred at about the same time. I can still charge the iPod up by plugging it into the firewire port on the computer, but there is no data communication. I tried forcing the iPod into firewire disk-only mode to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

have you tried booting with the first panther disk, going into the disk utility on there and seeing if it mounts there/if you can repair it there?

I've got the exact same problem as Axolot1.

I have tried mounting in disk utility with the Panther start up disk but still no joy.
Have also tried resetting PRAM and no improvement.

I know the Firewire port on my machine is good, because I can mount my external HD, complete a backup, or use the scanner or isight and they are all working correctly.

I didn't think it was the cable, because it does charge through it, but I guess I will truck down to the apple store and see if i get a different result with a new cable.

Any other suggestions?

Yeah the issue is I need my iPod urgently for transferring files to and from school, but I don't have time to go stand around thumbing my balls at the long ass tech support line at the apple store. Alls I can say is I'm glad I got that extended warranty.
