Does anybody care that these two are incompatible? I am considering purhcasing a new MBox and I just don't want to get stuck with a particular software product which may or may not be well supported. Does anyone have any experiences with MBox/Pro Tools LE?

It is what? Compatible with GarageBand, or well supported? If it is compatible with GB, then I will have no qualms (except maybe the two inputs . . .)

yup, I have an mbox and it plays just fine with garage band. You have to add garage band manually with the digidesign driver, but after you do that all is well.

Can you give me a pointer on that? I have been futzing around with the Pro Tools LE SW and I hate it. GB is all I need.

Just launch the digidesign Core audio setup app and add garage band to the list, then select Mbox as the input within garage band

Brilliant! That allowed GarageBand to use MBox, but now I have other problems. For ojne, the first time I selected the MBox in GB preferences I had to hard-boot the machine because audio (and the UI) froze. After reboot, GB showed the MBox as input (nevermind, I selected it again) but channel one has no gain despite having a Mic plugged in and the gain all the way up, and channel two has unpredicatble gain - it keeps going real high and real low. Do I need to update the driver? I installed the pro tools 6.4 update, but nothing else.

That's for the tips!

make sure you are setting the pre-amp correctly on the mbox itself. For each input you can select what the source of your audio is, mic, instrument, or line in. This will adjust the level of the pre-amp correctly for any given input. So, when you have your mic plugged in (you might need to turn on phantom power depending on the mic), make sure the LED on that input is set to mic.

That may have been complete user error (except the crash). When I switched back to Pro Tools I had the same problem when I noticed that I had switched the mic from line 1 to line 2 and the input volume for line 2 was all the way off. When I first got this thing I tried to use the line outs into a monitor for playback but I could never get the monitors NOT to live monitor the line ins - I.E., the monitors would play the playback from Pro Tools AND live monitor the mic as well - not good.
