I've been looking at faulty/broken iPods on eBay, and the majority seem to have the question mark folder logo appear on start up, rather than any physical damage.

This seems like an easy OS/software fix to me in most cases, if I were to acquire one - or is this a little risky? I would think items that have been dropped etc are a no no, but some of these seem a good deal.

Could be dead drives. I'm curious about this, too, as some of 'em are going cheap. If it's just a software/firmware re-install, you could make a small killing buying them fixing them and turning them over again.

Well this is exactly what I thought - I've found one that says the drive spins up and down too, which is a very good sign there isn't much wrong at all. However, I think some people are already clued in because some 'broken' ipods go for quite a bit.

Thing is, even if the drive is dead, the LCD, touchpad, case parts, and mainboard are worth quite a bit.

Well I'm going to go after one. This is on the assumption I can sell it for the same price I bought it for if things don't go to plan.

Here's a plan-- but two-- one with a crashed drive, and one with a broken LCD/firewire plug/headphone jack. Make a Frankenpod out of the two.

That might be a good idea, provided that two broken iPods don't end up costing as much as a good second hand one.
