Maybe you can help me out:

I bought a new Lacie d2 Firewire HD (250 GB) from Apple Online Store (promo with "Personal Backup X" software from Intego).

When I plugged in the FW cable, the d2 mounted on my desktop, showing a nice "d2"-looking icon. I then went to split my drive into 3 different partitions. Therefore, my HD was formatted and I lost the "d2" icon. Now, all I have are the standard Mac OS X orange Firewire HD icons.

Could someone provide the original LaCie icon (post here, e-mail, PM...)? And also tell me how to restore that icon so I have it in all 3 FW partitions? I thought there was a "Desktop" folder on the original configuration. I don't find any icon on lacie.com/support and LaCie didn't respond to the support form I filled out.

I'm sure that some of you out there own a Lacie d2 with the default partition. Thanks for your suggestions.

I've sent you a PM asking for your email address so I can reply with the icon. However, I seem to remember that the icon is on the disk supplied with the drive. I think the Silverlining software allows you to set the icon to the Lacie one you want.

Thanks! I will also check the CD supplied by LaCie when I get back home.

From what I know, Silverlining runs on OS 9 only. I killed Classic on my PowerBook a long time ago. Or maybe with SilverKeeper (OS X) then?

If someone else is interested, too:
How do you assign the icon to a FireWire drive? This may be common OS X knowledge, but please help out a switcher.

Maybe the user does a copy / paste to change only that device´s icon, or maybe he/she uses CandyBar to change the default icon for a FireWire device

BTW, I have a d2 80 GB FireWire hard disk, but it lacks the d2 icon, I just use a different icon set ot the whole system, but I have never saw the d2 icon. Could somebody put a pic?. Thanks.

Here is the procedure, courtesy of MacNN user Simon X:

"To attach the icon onto your HD is extremely easy. The quickest way is as
follows:
- Apple/Command-I or control/right-click on the folder with the icon in the
expanded zipped archive. (In other words Get Info on the folder)
- When the info window opens click on the HD icon in the top left. You
should see the icon highlighted. Copy this via Apple-C.
- Get Info on your FW HD now using the same method and another Info window
opens up. Again click on the icon and this time Paste. That's it.
There used to be a bug in earlier versions of OS X with the icon not
updating until logging out and in again, but it should be fine now."

Many thanks to Simon X. He also suggested www.iconfactory.com for more cool icons.

If anyone is still looking for the LaCie D2 icon, PM me and I'll get you a copy of it. I just picked up a d2 160GB drive to replace a failed non -LaCie drive. Fortunately I had backups of my files.

Brief note, just because somebody mentioned the Silverlining software:

I don't know if there's an OS X version of Silverlining, but if you plan on using your hard drive for audio, DO NOT USE THE SILVERLINING DRIVERS. Make sure you format using Apple's Disk Utility, or you will have problems with audio hard-disk access in OS X.
