I am trying to connect two Western Digital 9.1 GB WDE 9100 Ultra/Ultra2 SCSI hard drives to my B&W with an Adaptec 2940U2B PCI card. These drives have an 80 pin connection so I am using adaptors that have both a 68 pin and a 50 pin connection, a power plug, and jumpers for the SCSI address. The WDE 9100s also have a 31 pin jumper arrangement for addresses and SCSI functions. Even-though the Adaptec card shows up in system profiler in either OS9 or OSX, neither hard drive (connected thru a 68 pin cable) appears in any program including Disk Utility, Disk First Aid, Drive Setup, Adaptec's Power Domain, SCSI Probe, Alliance Power Tools, or FWB Hard Disk Toolkit PE. I am therefore not able to initialize or format these drives.
MacresQ from whom I ordered most of the components has no answer to the problem after suggesting the plug adapters and FWB toolkit neither of which made any difference. They have been more than fair in crediting all my purchases while not requiring the return of the merchandise. But still unanswered is how to get these drives to appear and be formatted.
Does anyone have the answers? It seems to me that it has something to do with the 31 pin jumper arrangement but I have tried assigning the SCSI addresses both on this set of pins, the adapters jumpers, and both. I have enabled and disabled Synchronous/Wide Negotiation, termination (there is also termination on the cable end), and termination power all with no result. Is there not a way for these Ultra2Wide drives to operate with the Adaptec card?
