My ipod shows a folder with an exclamation point when I try and start it. It will not show up on my desktop either. What should I do?

Also.. it's the older version without the dock and extra buttons.
Thanks in advance.

Have a read here:

One of those should solve your problem I expect!

Thanks for the responses, I have tried to reset it and I tried all the suggestions on the site but still no luck...

I can't run disk utility or try and restore the ipod because it won't show up on my computer.

booo

Hmmm - I know it's not showing up in finder/on your desktop, but have you tried going into the update utility and trying to restore it. It might let you restore it, even if the ipod isn't showing up in finder or on your desktop.

Failing that it might have to go for service

I had this exact problem. Then, the iPod eventually died and would
not restart. Since Apple had such draconian service in the early
days of the iPod it just sat on my desk for a year and three months.

I sent it to iPodMods.com and they were able to fix it. What they
found was that the firewire jack became disconnected so the battery
was never really being charged.

So, see if ipodmods can resurrect it for you.

if it's under warranty, just take it to the apple store or apple service provider or call apple care.

a good reason to buy apple care!
