My understanding was that 1.4 made me able to play ALC files on my 5GB iPod, yet iTunes won't copy them over because it says that the iPod can't play 'em. Did I hear incorrectly? If not, any idea what I need to do to make it work?

Accoring to this page: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
ALE only works with Dock Connector iPods and iPod minis. Your old 5GB is, unfortunately, can not play these files.

Sucks doesn't it. Why only the newer iPods and mini's only have this feature I don't know. Just like the different games added way back when that don't work with the 5GB iPod. I guess it's time to get a new iPod so I can have these features and more room for my ever going music library

so why did I upgrade to 1.4? Sucks indeed, even my Squeezebox can play 'em the way it's set up.

Only reason I upgraded was so my iPod would work with iTunes 4.5. But I still don't get why Apple just didn't make the new games and ALE for ALL the iPods. Just another way to get first gen. iPod owners to buy a new iPod. Finally I have a good excuse...I want to be able to play ALE files.

Again, according to http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

I don't have a good excuse. Why exchange my slightly heavier player for one with less battery life?

...I just don't get it, why does the iPod need to be updated to use 4.5, if not for ALC?

I think it's mostly because the DRM restrictions on tracks purchased from the iTunes Music Store changed with the 4.5 release (5 computers instead of 3, but you can only burn a playlist 7 times, not 10).
