I'm getting a scanner... question is, should I get an HP ScanJet 3970 or a Microtek Scanmaker 6000?

Neither. HP's have HORRIBLE MAC SOFTWARE.

Get an Epson or a Canon.

Very true dat. If you buy the HP, be prepared to lose functionality for a month every time you upgrade OS X by 0.0.1.
