Hi,
I have an old PCI card, specifically an Adaptec AHA-2940W/2940UW. I used to use this on a 8500 and I think I used it in a G4. It is a raid card for a 8 gig raid that I have. It's old, and I want to check to see what's on it before I part it out. Anyhow, I tried to put the card into my G5 and it dosen't want to fit into the slot. The only way it will fit is if I install it almost 3/4 inch back from the bracket mounting hole.
Does anyone have any info? Are older PCI cards compatible with the G5?

Why would you want an 8 gig hd in a G5 if the standard drives are so much bigger?
I think even if the cards fit (e. g. in the 1.6 GHz G5 which has standard PCI slots), you won't be able to wire your drive.

The 1.6GHz G5 has PCI slots that are mechanically exactly the same as the other two models. The only Adaptec cards that work in G5s are the 29160 and 39160, but I have had problems with a 39160 under 10.3.x. The best bet is Atto, but none are cheap.

Yes, but wouldn't it be cheaper to get another hd?

If you read the man's post, you'd noticed that he wants to see what's on the drive before he sells it.

I'm not going to use the drive, I just wanted to check it to see if I left any important files on it.
Last night after posting this, I have discovered based on Apple's web site that this card is no longer compatible.
This card was part of at one time a very expensive Disk Array. I took the disk array apart last night and I will reuse the case with a firewire bridgeboard and make an external HD with 2 new 200gb hard drives.
Anyhow, I just wanted to pull the files off the hard drive. I wasn't sure what I had on it since it has been several years since I used this drive. I wish I would have sold it on ebay 3 years ago, it might have been worth a couple hundred then. Now it is worth nothing.

If the drive was a part of a RAID, it will be likely that you won't be able to see anything without the other drives.
I suggest you to plug the drive into another Mac and copy `interesting' data to your G5.

NO ****?????? Damn!!!!!
hehehehehe. I know.
I am well aware of what makes up a RAID, and how it works. I gave up on rescueing the data before taking it apart.
