I'm currently at my local CompUSA. They have the Sony DRU-700A for $230. No media anywhere in the store or online. No references to it on xlr8yourmac.com. Anyone get one of these? I'd buy one right now and put in in a Firewire case if I could get my hands on media. The longer I wait, i'm sure the price will drop even more.

Should I take the plunge?

Anyway....

I bought it at BestBuy for $199. Popped it in an external Firewire case and OS X and Toast both recognize the correct model, but I can't tell how to find out if they recognize that it can burn 8.5 GB.

Media is supposed to be in next week. I've had a 20 GB video project sitting around in case these drives showed up someday so I'll make a dual-layered DVD project out of it and see how it goes.

According to the Roxio Press Release about Dual-Layer:

"The new DVD +R Double Layer capabilities of Toast 6 Titanium and Toast with Jam 6 will enable users to burn nearly twice the amount of personal data (from 4.7GB to 8.5GB), or record more than three hours of MPEG-2 (DVD-quality) video content on a single DVD +R DL disc... All registered Toast 6 Titanium and Toast with Jam 6 customers will be able to update their software using a free download available in June from the Roxio’s websites worldwide"

I'm not sure how the Mac OS native side will treat it. I would expect to hear more from Apple on Dual Layer at WWDC though, since it is such a hot topic in the DVD burning space right now.
