http://www.pretec.com/

Available in the second half of 2004.

When the iPod mini goes 8 GB, I'll probably buy one. (I already have an iPod 3G 15 GB.)

And curiously enough, from the same company, the 3GB CF card costs a whopping $1,490, and the 4GB card is $1,860.
And a 4GB iPod Mini is how much?

Don't ask... I don't know why either.

Either way, it certainly suggests an iPod Mini's HD size can get rather a lot larger in the not too distant future.

Btw, one site that reported the 12GB CF cards from Pretec said they were nearer $15'000
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

The price is for the Secret Service. They got loads of taxpayers cash to throw around. That's why Pretec sells these

Would camera's even understand what to do with that much room?

Is the data compressed somehow?

Yeah, I don't expect the price to really be $9999, at least after a year or so. And while I don't expect to see 12 GB iPod minis soon, I do expect to see 6 GB ones within the year, and maybe 8 GB next year.

12 GB is overkill for most cameras obviously, but there's more to CF than cameras.

Note, this appears to be a compact flash card, not a Microdrive. CF has no mechanical moving parts, and in general CF parts are more expensive than Microdrives, for the same size.

I'm not all that surprised by the initial list price of the card. That's very high density, and the bleeding edge of the curve is expensive. It will drop by a factor of 5 within 2 years, I'm sure.

That, and the fact that retail prices are way higher then what they actually go for.

So it will retail for "only" be $2000 in 2 years.
