Microsoft to undercut iPod price, offer more choices
Microsoft will begin selling portable music players for as much as 80 percent less than Apple's iPod, according to The Denver Post. "The Microsoft-branded devices will 'look and feel' as good as the iPod for as little as $50, said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of MSN at Microsoft Corp., at the Goldman Sachs fifth annual Internet Conference in Las Vegas. The iPod sells for $249 to $499. Microsoft will release a number of music players when it launches its online music service later this year, giving customers more choices than Apple, Mehdi said."

could this be real ?
I wonder why Apple wouldn't be able to do the same with a new iPod...

What I mean is that even if it is fake many people will hear about it... even if it is fake

If it is true, I will be floored. I doesnt make any sense. First, how? How can you make hard-drive based mp3 player with firewire or usb2 connectivity for ~$50? How!? A decent cd player costs $50.
The only way that it could be possible is if Microsoft plans to market and sell the device the same way as they did with Xbox. They lose money with every purchase of an Xbox, but make up for it with software sales. If they plan to lose money with every "MicrosoftPod" sold and make up for it with music sales, they will have a hard time profiting at all. Right now Apple makes a few cents off every song sold; Apple profits from sales of the iPod, not the songs. How would Microsoft exactly make ANY money?

Microsoft isn't releasing an iPod clone for $50. They're releasing a range of music players starting at $50 with (supposedly) similar usability to the iPod. Vis à vis they're planning a line of products that have crappy storage capabilities but decent enough interfaces they're somewhat usable by people.
There's no technical reason Microsoft couldn't do this. Like the rest of their hardware it will be manufactured by third parties and simply carry a Microsoft logo. Their plan is obviouslt to oust not just Apple as a competitor but also AAC as a competitor to WMA. Microsoft would love if everyone selling music online were beholden to their whims by needing to license WMA. Right now a majority of the online music market is controlled by Apple and the AAC format which even with Apple's proprietary DRM warpper is still AAC.

Slashdot posted a story, the quote was crazy misinterprited. M$ said, there are other companies making iPod killers and they will be providing software.

The iPod is the music player for the rest of us. If anything gets simpler than the iPod, I don't see how it would function.
Anyway, Apple wasn't targeting the $50 music player market when they first intro'd it, and they still aren't. They're targeting the $250-$499 market. So Microsoft can have their sure-to-be crappy WMA-only, USB, clunky player, and I'll keep my iPod. If you want an example of Microsoft's excellent designs, just check out the X-Box.
