Hi.
I've had problems importing iMovie-material to my external drive with my single FW PowerBook G4, just like in this post.

Computer: PowerBook G4/500, 512 Ram, OS X 10.3.4

Disk: "FireSmart ALU 160GB (8MB Cache) , 160 GB, 8.9ms, 7200 rpm
(Genesys "711"-chipset?) Supposed to deliver "30-35 Mb/sec"

When I measured the disk performance with "Quick Bench" from intech software (came with the disk) I got read/write performance like this:

Read: 6.7 MB/sec
Write: 13 Mb/sec

Is it supposed to be that low?

The internal disk (20 Gig 4200 rpm) performs like this:
Read: 18 MB/sec
Write 22 Mb/sec

Oh. Yes, the PowerBook was just started and no other devices connected.

This link http://www.barefeats.com/fire18.html doesn't make me happier...

But the TiBook in that test still got 10MB more than me both ways.

I have re-installed the system, updated to 10.3.4 and still have the same low performance.

You may be facing a couple of issues here.

1) Many of the first-generation TiBooks (I had a 400) had Firewire problems which are especially apparent in sustained transfer (like DV capture or even moving large quantities of files).

2) I don't know anything about the Genesis chipset in your drive, but I have experienced that chipsets other than the Oxford 911 can affect performance. I had a generic Firewire case that uses another chipset (can't remember the name now, starts with P) and it performed very poorly compared to my other Oxford-based drives.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.

Ok. Is it anything I can do about that, or is it time to spend some serious money on a new PowerBook

OK. I'll try my uncle's LaCie D2 to see if there is a difference.
