before you resort to buying vuescan (an overpriced klunker--albeit very reliable), i spent some time on the phone with microtek support for my scanmaker x12usl scanner and 10.3.4.

They have a workaround on their awful website, you can find it by googling in your scanner model, of all things. However, the workaround did not work for me, and i found it was incomplete. So I called in.

Note this is for the x12usl specifically and 10.3, but it might apply to other Microtek scanners. And in no way am I excusing their horrendous website and crappy software.

1. unplug usb scanner from computer and from scanner
2. shut off scanner
3. do a find on "microtek". delete everything
4. do a find on 'scanwizard'. delete everything
5. empty trash
6. download scanwizard 5 v7.01 software here: http://www.support.microtek.com/tech...008#stepbystep
7. download the patch for the x12usl as well, the 'spp' driver (you can find this on the above link or by googling in your scanner model)
8. install teh scanwizard 5 v7.01, full upgrade
9. install the x12usl spp upgrade
10. go to applicatoins-->scanwizard 5 --> and delete 'microtek scanner finder'
11. also in same folder delete 'microtek scanner configuration'
12. go to your hard drive (not user) library folder, go to application support, find 'scan wizard 5' and inside there find 'support bundles' and in there find 'scanner_drivers'
13. delete ALL drivers BUT the one for your model (and if you have two of your model, delete one of them)
14. empty trash
15. shut down computer (do not restart)
16. plug in usb to computer, usb to scanner
17. power on scanner
18. restart computer
19. click on desktop alias for scanwizard 5 (it's a slow start)
20. should work!

hopefully this can prevent someone paying for software that should be included. microtek support phone number is: 310-687-5922. they are actually helpful.

just figured i'd post this so nobody else had to deal with this or buy vuescan.

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are
missing.

i realized i made an error, now that i came back to these steps when reinstalling my system.

here are the corrections:

in step 7, i mention a "spp driver". it should be "ssp driver"
in step 13, i say 'delete one of the two'. it's critical you delete the SCSI version, not the USB, otherwise it won't work (if you use a usb microtek scanner). you can tell by the name of the folder which one it is.

have not tested any other microtek scanners other than the x12usl

good luck!
