looking for a scanner that integrates well into the mac system for light work, nothing fancy, scanning family photos, documents, comic books, etc...
anything out there that is relatively cheap that people have had good success with?

I'm using a Canoscan 80. After I updated the driver (from cannons website) it works great (Even the buttons on the front work). I'm using the the Adobe Photoshop CS plugin. Check out the Vuescan software. It works with a lot of printers, and offers superb OS X support.

have you done any negative scanning with your LiDE 80? That's what I'm interested in using it for (that and scanning text)...any comments?
Thanks,
Luke

Has anyone had any success with Epson scanners and their software? Better or worse than the Canons?
Thanks

Epson's scanners are great, and their drivers are good. Epson's scanners offer somewhat higher image quality, but are larger; Canon has some very small models that take up effectively no space in storage.

I'm currently borrowing a Epson Perfection 2400. It is a great scanner; quite fast and the software integrates reasonably well with Photoshop CS.
I tried a couple of Canon scanners (LiDE series) and found them to be quite slow in comparison to the Epson.

Any experiences scanning negatives with the 2400? It's the scanner I'm leaning towards now.

I would strongly suggest you check out the VueScan software ( www.hamrick.com). It is cross platform and supports just about every scanner out there. I've gone through a number of scanners (Epson, Canon, Nikon, etc) and I use VueScan to control all of them. The interface is intuitive & powerful, and it is familiar when you change scanners.
Using VueScan, I've scanned in over 3000 family photos and documents. Vuescan allowed me to create a streamlined workflow that wasn't possible with the supplied vendor software. The vendor stuff was just too slow and too clumsy. Most vendors know how to write PC software, and they get it to compile when they ship it to the mac users. VueScan, on the other hand, is a solid piece of OSX software.
You might also want to look into iView Pro for storage of the images. It has a lot of nifty features that allow you to note who is actually in the pictures, so that at a later date, you can pull all of the pictures of Grandma out, verses going through 3k picture manually..
iView can be found at http://www.iView-multimedia.com

Just got an Epson 4870 USB and Firewire connections. It is fast and does a better job than the Umax PLII scsi we paid $3,000.00 for 5 years ago. It comes with Epsons software for OS9.2.2 and OSX. It also comes with Silverfast software that also works in both old and new OS's.

Can anybody recommend a good Mac-compatible scanner with sheet-feed?
