My friend is selling me his iPod 15g because he purchased a 40g. Before he sells it to me he's trying to sync the music on his computer to his new iPod and can't. He doesn't have any iTunes purchased music. All his music is ripped from his personal collection of CD's.
My question is.... How can he sync it to his new iPod without re-ripping it all so he can finally hand over the 15 gig to me. I'm not interested in keeping his music because we have different music tastes.
Also, he uses his iPod with Windows. I guess I can keep it that way but I think I'd rather use it with my Powerbook. Do I have to reformat it (can that be done) change firmware, etc?
Any help will be appreciated.

WAIT!!!

first of all, he's using iTunes right? He needs to install the disc that came with the iPod, or download the newest iPod software. The reason why he can't sync it is because all iPods come Mac formatted. By using the iPod updater software, it changes it into a PC ipod. But whatever happens.. DON"T FORMAT THE IPOD, that will kill it.

After that update, he'll be good to go... no need to re-rip or anything.

As for this question, you can use Windows formatted iPods in Mac OS ... you just can't use Mac formatted iPods in Windows. Windows, unmodded, isn't able to read Mac formatted drives. If you own or use both Macs and PCs, I would leave the 'Pod in Windows format as you will be able to make better use of it as a portable drive.

I'm not aware of any advantage to having the iPod in a Mac format ... perhaps somebody else does?

On a Mac, having it Mac-formatted gives it higher performance, and also allows the iPod to play while connected to FireWire.

Regardless, why does he need to keep the songs on the iPod? Obviously they were on his computer at one point, so he could just copy them from the computer again.
