I have an editing bay mini dv hardware that only has firewire connector, but my avid will only read a usb

I have never heard of such a device that would let you do that.

There is! I think it was Belkin which sold this adaptor although the price was quite high (180$ iirc).. doing a quick search I couldn't find it again

You don't.
I have never heard of any such product ever existing, and considering the complexity of the drivers that would be needed to accomplish this, I give it about a 0% chance of ever happening.
Just get a FireWire card for the Avid machine. Of course, that doesn't mean the Avid software will have any idea what to do with it.
From what I gather (keyword: MiniDV), you want to import DV video. DV is a standard based on FireWire, and uses some technical features that USB doesn't really offer. I do not think it's possible to have a DV-standard video stream over USB.

True, I would do that and would be super happy, but alas Avids edl manager does not like firewire yet, I blame Avids weak support of standards, but whatever, I'll figure out something.
