While obviously I'm sure it'll be much cooler when we see a real, full color photo, but those things look like they belong hooked up to a Dell.
Not too found about them ditching ADC either but I can understand why they are.

>y dropped ADC.
Noooooooooooooooooooo.... oh well. I thought at some point they would have to do it to support 30" / hdtv type sizes...and it makes no sense for them not to have it on the 30" but do have it on the 2 smaller sizes.
anyone know what my 2 apple 20" lcds would fetch on the used monitor market?

That's nothing. Check this out:
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/st...&storeId=1
That's the same as *FOUR* 23" Cinema displays in one 21" monitor. SGI also makes one. Gorgeous.
DVI is a necessary evil. Expect new third-party support for Macs (PNY for one, perhaps), hopefully the Nvidia Quadro series of cards. I do have some reason to believe that this will in fact happen in the near to mid-term.
As far as the fw ports are concerned, perhaps the perfect means to hookup external video sources to the monitor for stand alone use: dv cameras, ipods(?), some sort of tv tuner...

Yeah, a coworker has used one of those, and she says it's VERY nice. However, it's completely unrelated here.
The point I was trying to make with the link in my previous message is that LG Philips makes a monitor with the exact same specs as the one described in the ThinkSecret rumour.
By the way, the 2560x1600 resolution means that a single DVI cable won't work. The monitor will need two DVI connections.

If anything, the apple display will STILL have a single cable. Yes, you heard that, a single cable.
Once upon a time there was a cinema display with a DVI interface. It ALSO had one cable. At the end of the cable was a pod, it looked a bit like a squashed airport hub, which had DVI, USB, power, etc on it.
That's what I'd expect, one cable from the back of the screen but a polite little box at the end with all the outputs.

Hey, if it'll get me a 23" Cinema HD for cheap, I'm all for it.

no new displays today, damn
and, what's more... the new dual powermacs still have DVI and ADC. so, my guess is we're going to see an 'update' 20" and 23" display with ADC and a brand new 30" with DVI?
go apple, bring on those new displays!

Actually, that's not true. The Nvidia 3000G can drive the IBM display with one DVI output, but the second output is then limited to 1600x1200 (digital) resolution.
"Dual-link TMDS - drive one digital display up to QUXGA 3840x2400 and another at 1600x1200 digital simultaneously"
http://www.pny.com/products/quadro/f...article=metavr
In the end, it might be unrelated, but it's still once cool display. I hope that a shift to DVI connections signals the availability of cards like the 3000G for the Mac. It doesn't even have to be from Apple directly. I'll gladly give PNY my $2500 for the card, though they're unlikely to support the platform without Apple providing driver development support.

Well they were on the money with the form of the 3G iPods, and details of the G5 updates. All in all they are the best rumour site.

Actually, they might be including ADC on the new G5s so that you can drive Apple displays you already own. It wouldn't have to mean that any of the new displays have ADC.

ThinkSecret's software rumors are usually iffy, but you can take their hardware rumors to the bank (most of the time), especially when they give really specific specs and such.

I have a dual 2GHZ 2 GIG that I bought last year. Will it support the new monitors? I've been waiting for ages to get a new display. All this talk of different connectors makes me wonder if they will work on my present G5. Apple will make some kind of connector to make it work, yes? I need my dual monitor setup to work with the new 23 rumored coming out!

Weird though that Apple has not yet released the new displays...
Going to have some ticked off people who just ordered a new G5 but an old display, only to have the new displays come out like a week later.
Stock must still be pretty high on the old displays. Perhaps that'll motivate Apple to drop the price a bit? Nahhh...

does anyone know if it's possible to use flat panel monitors with DVI connectors as HDTV television sets? i'm pretty sure comcast HDTV in san francisco lets you use DVI connectors.
i don't need a 30" monitor for my computer, but an apple 30" flat panel HDTV set would be sweet.

Except January last year when they INSISTED that there was NO NEW HARDWARE coming and that THINKSECRET IS ALWAYS RIGHT.
Turned out the best announcement I have ever heard from Apple happened that month - the 17" PowerBook.
Whilst ThinkSecret is still usually on the ball, I take their opinions with a grain of salt. Furthermore every time I read their "ThinkSecret facts are good coz we get it right all the time" crap I just think to myself "Stick a 17" PowerBook up ya ass!"

And the time they made some big report swearing that superdrives would not be in powerbooks for a VERY VERY long time. less then a month later the shipped with superdrives.

Oh yes, the new displays (might) simply have standard DVI which will work fine with any G5 and most G4 towers, except the earliest ones. I would expect, as has been suggested, that there will still just be one cable coming out of the back of the display which will split after a few feet into dvi, usb, firewire and power cables. There will likely be a power "brick" which will need to sit on the floor next to your electrical outlet.
Hopefully there will be a second dvi port for connecting to a HDTV tuner.

See above. Such a 30" screen would need two DVI (or ADV & DVI) ports just to run it. (Caveats above.) The 2560x1600 resolution is too high for a single standard DVI or ADC connector.

Agreed. My response was to Norty, who was referring to a possible new 23" model for his G5.

Thanks Idaver for your educated guess on the connector. I suspect it'll work on my dual G5... Although a 30 inch monitor sounds good, my dual set-up with a 23 will work just fine for my fine art print work... What do you suppose a graphic card to power the 30incher will run? I've literally been waiting since last October to buy a new monitor and at this point I'm getting desperate.

Don't the G5 towers have dual monitor support already built in? I believe that's all you would need but I might be wrong. I seem to remember that some of the mirrored drive door G4 towers had dual monitor support.
