Hey all.

Just curious if my problems are common or rare. I've bought a succession of routers in the past few months for my Powerbook G4's wireless card; two Dlinks and a Belkin. The Dlinks were returned cuz they kept being broken, but among other problems they would lose the DSL connection through the modem at random times, and also every time a computer on the network would restart. This normally wouldn't be a problem, but my housemates' PCs are NOT the world's most reliable computers, and I run a number of Bittorrent downloads from the SomethingAwful forums (TV shows and stuff, don't get your knickers in a knot) which uses private trackers that rely on a constant IP address to keep a connection. It's also annoying to keep being signed in and out of MSN. Finally I upgraded from the Dlink routers to a Belkin with the hope that the problem would disappear. It didn't; same thing. So...

If you skipped all the stuff above, is it common for routers to reset a connection every time a computer restarts? If so, can I prevent it? If not, anyone have a clue what's going on?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Seems like a very odd problem. I've used Netgear the longest but have chanced upon Edimax, D-Link, and Linksys a while back. The only problem I frequently run into is that the device hangs once in a while. Only a power cycle will fix it. When the device hangs, the Internet connection (WAN to LAN) is dropped off. Local LAN works fine.

I don't suppose your DSL provider is renewing its DHCP lease, though, is it? I suppose your routers are logging in via PPPoE (username/password)?

Weird about a restart of a computer (Mac or PC? Mac and PC?) affecting it.

Yeah, it's always been a PPPOE login. What are the chances the problem is on their end and not mine?
