A nice feature the Windows drivers offers is the ability to store print jobs on the printer, and require a password to print them out. This allows security in a shared printer enviornment where hundreds of people use the same printer. Unfortunatly, I can't find a way to enable this on my Powerbook. Anyone seen a way for the OS X drivers for an HP Laserjey 4100 (or similar model with this feature) to allow me to use "job retention" as it is called on the Windows side?

I don't think the Mac can do this. But let me ask why it's useful?

The printer I print to is a decent ways away from my desk. Certain things I print out for my records, work related or not should not be seen by others. And sometimes I forget to run to the printer right away. By having job retention, I can send my print jobs and ensure they are independant of my system, and printable any time I end up going to the printer.
I'm going to try sharing out my printer setup on the Windows machine to the Mac. The windows machine is set to retain by default, and it may send the necessary bits if it gets a job from my Mac.

That's interesting. I've never heard of such a feature. So when you get to the printer, you print the document using the buttons on the printer somehow? Wouldn't others be able to do the same?

Lots of printers have it. Xerox calls it "secure printing", which is a lot better name than "job retention."
Anyway, at least on Xerox printers, it definitely works in OS 9, but seems to be missing in OS X.

I see...that sounds like a nice feature. It looks like Xerox doesn't offer drivers for Mac OS X.

It offers a few settings, one includes a PIN or password needed to print the document. The 4100 Laserjet has a full qwerty keyboard on it, and acts as a copier and scanner as well.
For the record, Windows will not share IP based printers, since technicially the are already shared.

Those features are all part of the PPD file, which the PostScript printer driver then uses to construct the Print dialog. OS 9's LaserWriter 8 driver (and its alter ego, "Adobe PS") seems to support more print dialog extensions than the OS X print dialog.
My hunch is that it's not Xerox's fault, though perhaps a programmer here with OS X printer driver experience could shed some light on the subject.

I wondered about that. It would be nice to know more, because it seems to me that OS X print dialog is pretty full featured.
