Hi,
I have a 5GB/1st gen iPod that I used for some time as a hd to exchange data between my work Pismo and my home TiBook. - that was great!
Times have changed and work required to have a Linux/Windows computer (we have a big project, so the majority voted for Linux).
Now my question:
The new iPods are also windows compatible. Can they be configured in a way that the drive can be used with Windows AND Mac OS at the same time? Or more precise: What filesystem does the iPod use? Is it the same for the Windows version and the Mac version or do they use different filesystems? This information could also serve to find out how to mount the iPod under Linux.
If it would be possible to exchange data with Window/linux, this would be a reason to replace my old white friend that still does a tremendous job.
in the meantime I found this:

Can someone confirm that a Windows iPod is fully supported under Mac? This would solve the problem, because Linux can also access FAT.

I can verify that a Windows formatted iPod is working fine on Mac OS X.
* A Windows iPod uses FAT32, which is supported on most operating systems (MS Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, etc...).
* A Mac iPod uses HFS, which is only supported on Mac OS.
So if you restore your iPod on a Windows computer, it will be compatible!

Unfortunately whenever I need to bring files from my Mac to a PC and vice-versa my iPod (Mac-formatted) will not be explorable on Windows unless I format it, and then it works on both systems. Formatting it kind of makes transferring files useless though.

Thank you albook,
great news.
But this will cost me 300€ for an iPod mini (as soon as it has more than 4GB in it). Good news also for my girlfriend, who will get a nice white present.
Or has anybody sucessfully tried to use the old 1st gen iPod under Windows?
Michael
