My ipod is not mounting on the desktop. It's charging and still plays fine, but I'm unable to update it, open it, etc.. I tried unplugging and plugging it back in, but to no avail. A dialog box comes up saying that the drive can't be read by OS x. Do I need to reinitialize the ipod? And if I do, what happens? I am running OS 10.2.8. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Run Disk First Aid (part of Disk Utility) on it, and if that can't fix the problems, try a heavy-duty program like DiskWarrior.
