The better question is why would you buy one? I'd think most people today would have rejected Zip Drives a while ago, in favor of cheaper and universally accepted CDs.

Depends what you do. I still have clients walk through the door with Zips (and even floppies) 2 or 3 times a month. I haven't personally used one for backup/transfer in a couple of years, but I still need the drive once in a while.

It's amazing how quickly the Zip Disk fell out of fashion. One day they were very popular and often-used. The next day we had USB flash drives for sneaker-net and CD burners for longer term, larger file storage.

Zips can still be used for personal backups of smaller files and since they're re-writeable, unlike CDRs, they can be more convenient for such use.

The drive will be supported for some time yet.

Thinking about it. I haven't used a Zip for years... when I worked in graphics a few years ago, they were the storage medium of choice! I was drowning in them!

I use CD's and DVD's for backup but when I need to transfer files from my MDD to my Beige G3 to my 7100 the only thing they have in common thats fast and easy is zip disks.

Ya the 100 were popular, I know about 2 people with a 250 drive, I don't know a soul on earth that got that stupid 700 meg drive, that couldn't even write to 100 meg disks.

Just about nobody I know uses Zips anymore as they don't want to send a small file on a $20 disk and have to worry about getting it back. Everyone just sends files on a $.30 CD-R that holds 7x more and doesn't care if they get it back.

Zips are dead. Anyone want to buy the 20 disks I have laying around?

I'd give it about a week before it breaks.

I give him 3 days before he realize he has no use for it.
