I have a 17" Trinitron display, and just this morning noticed that whenever I open a full-screen, mostly-white window (spreadsheet) the whole display dims. I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me from experience if this means that my monitor's days are numbered? Actually, it would be good if it went, because this is my work monitor and I could then get a nice new LCD display

How old is it?
CRTs get dimmer with time, this is part of the normal aging process. Do you notice any loss in contrast/sharpness?

If you are not sure, try to check out some new(er) displays to see a difference.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

It's about 3 years old.

The really odd thing is that it only dims when I open a large white window. Otherwise it's bright as ever.

It sounds like it could be an internal adjustment, compensating for the brigtness of the signal. I've heard that absolute black and absolute white are not good for CRT screens.

My 17" Apple Studio Display does this too.
