I'm buying a used Apple 23" HD Display monitor and the seller has no idea what treatment it has had in the past (he's a reseller). What should I check? And if it looks fine plugged in, is that it?

Also, this model came out in May 2002 so it can't be more than two years old. Any way of checking it's manufacturing date?

Much thanks!

Check the brightness, make sure it's bright enough for you. Also make sure it doesn't have any dead pixels.

cheers

Thanks. I was going to check for bad pixels (the one thing I did know). Use a white then black background?

My main worry is I buy it and two weeks later it's dead. Always a risk, I know. I just want to know if it's working now then it means it's ok (which I generally use in PC stuff) is ok with LCD's?

I'm buying it at about half price. I have a feeling that's good. Any comments there on a used 23" appreciated...

There are some apps which run better checks for bad pixels, like cycling through different colors so you can find ones which only appear on certain backgrounds. Search on Versiontracker for "LCD" or "pixel" and you'll find a bunch (free).

Can you buy AppleCare on it?

No, I don't think so.
Bottom line:

1. Use PixelCheck to check for bad or stuck pixels.
2. Check brightness.

If both pass then it's ok? Or as good as we can tell, and therefore worth taking the risk of buying?
