Of course I have not seen one of these new displays yet and I'm sure the drool factor will be high. I see the 20' as the consumer display over the larger sizes and it just doesn't compete with what else is on the market. Apple does seem to want to sell these to non Mac customers who are in my opinion more cost conscious (they always justify their Dell on price above everything else). Apple products for many years have been about quality and leading edge design but there is a limit to what all but the rich are willing to pay for a little bit of style.

But these monitors are technically designed for their pro line of machines. That probably justifies the pricing in their minds. And a quick search on Frooge shows that Apple is actually in the ballpark when it comes to the price of their 20" monitor (this is comparing it to brand names I've heard of, not the crap you find at BestBuy with a name like 'Kenwoo 'or 'somy'.

I use to think these monitors were overpriced until I sat down and did some comparisions. For example Sony makes a 20" 4:3 aspect ratio and it sells for $1100. Formac makes a 20" 4:3 ratio and it sells for $1299.00.

Sure can you find lcd flat panels that are cheaper? Yes, but this doesn't mean the Apple's are overpriced.

1. Apple is one of the very few vendors that makes a true digital display. 95% of all monitors that have a digital connection also have an analog connection. This mean they are truly analog displays.

2. 97% of flat panel monitors are 4:3, I prefer the widescreen aspect ratio. It's easier to have your documents and tool palettes open.

3. 95% of the competitors out their look like cheap plastic shells.

You really must consider what is more important price or features.

In the end if you buy an Apple display you will get a quality product that will last you for a number of years.

I would have originally agreed they were overpriced till I researched them more. Apple's price is close to the other compariable displays, and Apple is known to have very high quality displays.

The one cable out and the USB and FW hubs in the display is nice along with the matching my G5's Alumnium casing. Far nicer than my black plastic 19" Planar I currently have. I definetlly think I will be getitng the 20" after I see one

My only issue with the displays is the warrantee. You get a 1 year warrantee vs my Planar's 3 year. I know I can get Apple care but just another thing to buy. I haven't seen how much that's going to cost me yet.

My G5 calls to one so I'll probably get one reguardless :b

And remember, as Steve mentioned in the keynote, other companies use the displays that Apple rejects.
