Anybody have a recommendation on a external tape drive that is supported under Mac OS X and is around $500

Probably one of the Exabyte firewire tape drives. How much data you looking to back up? $500 is very low end for a tape drive.

Personally I'd back up to an external firewire HD and offsite the thing. Have an rsync script (or Now Synchronize) to do differential updates every couple days.
