I just got a Microsoft Wireless Optical 2.0 mouse. It works fine, but only when my corded mouse remains plugged in to the keyboard! The wireless mouse is plugged into the back of my G4. System profiler shows them on different buses. I tried restarting with the corded mouse out but the optical will not function until I plug in the corded mouse. Any ideas what to try next?

I assume you're using OS X, and when you say the wireless is plugged in, you actually mean the dongle is plugged in.
First, I'd try plugging the dongle into your keyboard and leaving your corded mouse unplugged. If that doesn't work, I'd download the latest driver (5.0?) for the intellimouse from the web. Then toss the old driver and the driver's preference file from Users>Username>Library>Preferences.... and then reinstall the new driver... all with the corded mouse unplugged.
You can also repair permissions using disk utility, and maybe should do that before trying anything else. Repair permissions after any install too. Finally, if you're using an older version of 10, that may be the problem. Good luck.

One other thing I forgot. Again, in OS X, in system prefs, the Microsoft drivers you loaded should have installed a Microsoft preference panel down near the bottom of the window. Making sure your corded mouse is not plugged in, and your wireless mouse dongle IS plugged in, open that Microsoft panel, and click on the button "update mouse"... you should get your wireless named then, and hopefully once it's the named mouse, it should work without the need for you corded mouse.

I found the cure. I moved the MS Mouse preference pane to the trash. I then unplugged all the mice and restarted. I then plugged in the MS mouse. It began to work even without the prefpane. I then moved the pane back to the preference pane folder and got more control of the mouse.
It is working fine. I really like the smooth rolling scroll wheel much better than the "clicky" Logitech wheel I had been using.

Yup. And that tilt is great too, when you need it. Works so well it makes you wish you had a couple more buttons, eh?
