Should I be shutting it down when I am not using it or will it do the same thing as the mouse, just shut off when not in use for a period of time?

I don't believe it will automatically shut off, but I leave mine on anyway. When you think about it, it doesn't really use much battery power when you aren't typing, since it doesn't have to send signals to the computer other than just to keep the bluetooth connection established.

It does sleep. The batteries will last for months.
