since i got a nice new summer job, ive decided to get a ipod, something that ive wanted since they've came out. Before i go out and buy the 20 gig model for 400 bucks, i was wondering if there was any rumors/chances that apple would be releasing new ipods anytime soon. not that i would go for the newer one, but i would like to know if the prices of the current ones are gonna drop anytime soon. i no longer have the time to keep up with all of apples new things and what not, in fact i dont even know when the current ipods were released, ie: i dont know if an update is even in the near future, or if these current ones were just released.

thanks,
DGD

I'd wait, if you can. If you look at the update history on the MacRumors Buyers Guide, you'll see that (historically) the iPod is due for an update.

Also, this AppleInsider story says that inventory of the low-end iPod is dwindling and predicts it will be phased out in September when a new iPod is announced.

Hitachi has "announced" 60 GB drives that would fit in an iPod (not mini) much to Apple's chagrin, but I don't believe they are supposed to ship until Sept. You probably won't see one of these drives in an iPod before October.

There would be absolutely no point in Apple either updating the specs or lowering the price on the mini, considering the demand and backlog.

TODAY!

but now ive got a couple more questions... see i was gonna get the 20gb for 400, that came with remote and dock... now i cant decide if i want the 40 for 400 or the 20 for 300? i dont really need 40gb, but do i have a remote and dock for the extra 100 bucks? it would make sense to get the 40gb cause the remote and dock are 40bucks a peice so its like getting twice the space for 20 bucks, right?

edit: and when will the new ones ship?

TODAY AGAIN! .. lol .. on the ipod page it says instant gratification .. go into an apple store. so i assume they are here .. i have the same problem .. i assume there isnt any third party remote?!? .. so if i were to use the ipod remote for forty bux .. (not yet including tax)

the dock n carry case is another eighty but i can do without the carry case (i could get a 3rd party case) and the dock ( a nicety .. not a nessessity) it would still be only 60 bux for double the space .. i only wonder how much thicker the forty is .. and if i should engrave or not (dunno if it complicates applecare/warantee

I'd get the 40 GB merely b/c your music collection will probably never get smaller and will only expand as you acquire more CDs or downloads. My 40GB has served me very well for over a year now, but I've finally reached the point where my collection has grown over 40GBs. I need the 60GB one now.

So if you want to keep yours around for awhile, I'd go for the 40GB model. If you have any thought you might trade it in within the year, go for the 20.

The 40 GB is noticeably thicker than the 20 GB. That's one reason I got my 15 GB 3G over a 30.

My music collection resides on my (G3, OS 9.1 equipped) iMac DV/SE with whatever version of iTunes that runs with OS 9.

Will I be able to run a new iPod from the G3 iMac? Or will I be out of luck without OSX?

Please help the iPod newbie!
